this movie is fantastic. it's too bad we have to analyze the heck out of it for english.
this question has been wracking my brain all week. we were asked to find the foreshadowing in the movie. but i cant tie anything together; nothing from the beginning leads me to neil's death, or anything else for that matter.

a little help? =]

Watch it at the point when the class meets Mr. Keating (Robin Williams)

When Robin Williams' character has his first class, he takes them out to the hall with all the old pictures. He talks about all of the people in the pictures have "stopped breathing, turn cold, and die." Neil has an expression of nervous recognition, like he has thought about dying (which comes to be true.)

It can be difficult sometimes to locate elements of literature in a movie, but in this case, you are right that it was difficult to locate 'foreshadowing'. But you're overlooking a small part - not a big part:

Symbolism:
Neil seems to symbolize his kneeling down before everyone - such as his father (who takes away all control Neil tries to have - such as the editor of the newspaper) and the school. Perry seems to be symbolic for "perish" and death, "foreshadowing Neil's suicide" later in the movie. I think that's why Todd and Neil got along so well. (On the first day of Keating's class, Keating states that they are all going to die. Neil looks incredibly disturbed while considering this.) Neil could control Todd, and that was the only thing in his life he felt he had control over. Also, in a way, I think Neil saw himself in Todd, because Neil acted towards his father the way Todd acted towards everyone. By trying to help Todd, he thought maybe he could help himself. Neil claims, "the meek might inherit the earth, but they don't make it into Harvard"- and he was right - Neil didn't make it into Harvard - the foreshadowing there indicated Neil's death. Good piece.

He was the most influencable character. He also played the tragic character in a Midsummer Night's Dream. The affect his father had on him was very strenuous. After watching the movie, if you think about it, these three things foreshadow his eventual demise. I hope this helps you!
