I tend to get into bad moods, and I could use some help maintaining a better mood. I'm not talking about happiness. To me happiness is not a mood, it's a realization that things are getting better, or something good has happened. Being in a good mood means you have energy and feel like participating in life.

Exercise, (particularly aerobic or "cardio" exercise") releases endorphins, those mood lifting chemicals into your brain. In order to receive endorphins, you must get your heart pumping and keep it there for at least 20 minutes. In addition to lifting your mood, you will burn excess calories, build muscle, strengthen bones, prevent your risk of a heart attack, cancer, etc, not to mention that it gives you a feeling of accomplishment. I would choose exercise before you see a doctor; there have been studies done that indicate that daily exercise combats depression nearly as much as taking prescription medication.

There are two things i do to get in a better mood. First I think of someone who is worse off than I am. This helps in realizing that there is something good in my life.

the one that works the best for me though is setting an attainable goal, and spending alot of time trying to attain it. This helps take up my time and give me meaning and purpose.

I put on the music and dance--even when I don't feel like it--because it just does amazing things for my spirit. Or, if it's nice outside, I go for a walk. Or, I play the piano or guitar. This is what helps me, as I tend to be in bad moods on gray days.

I lived with depression for years. What I finally realized is that we can interpret the world the way we choose, not the way others present it. I am happy to wake up every morning. I do not let anybody, or anything detract from that. It took a while, but my body finally adjusted the hormones to allow for that, and my life has been much better ever since.

Here's what I do to "lift my mood."

I'm fortunate to live in an area where I'm surrounded by natural beauty; river, islands, forests, trails, etc.

I just either put the canoe in the water, take along some drinks and snacks and just paddle about.

That, or I take a relaxed walk in the woods; maybe take the trail up to the top of the bluffs.
