The same thing happens to me. It's very possible it has nothing to do with benching or even weight lifting, although that might aggrivate it and therefore it becomes more pronounced. I find that there are a couple of over-looked reasons.

First, to tell if you have a joint or a muscle problem, get someone else to move your arm for you in the way that causes you to feel the soreness. If it's muscle that's sore, you shouldn't feel very little if anything. If it's your muscle joint / rotater cuff, then when someone else moves your arm, you'll feel it. This will let you know where the problem lies, or so I've been told.

It could be the way you sleep. If you sleep on your side, the shoulder can become sore from staying in a "pressured position".

If you work at a desk and or behind a computer, the way you sit can have a lot to do with it.

The best way to work through this is simply stop doing those exercises that aggrivate your shoulder. I've done both benching and dumbwell presses. I sometimes feel the dumbell presses actually do a better job on working the chest muscles. Try doing those and also remember to use lighter wieght until your shoulder feels better. There's no sense in causing more problems than already exist. If you can not do a weight with proper form and without pain. DO NOT DO IT. Don't buy into the "no pain, no gain" theroy. No pain means no pain, that doesn't mean standard muscle soreness from being used is not to be expected.

See a massage therapist. They can do deep tissue massages to help the muscles loosen up and heal.

Or, have someone massage the area of soreness. It's possiblel you could have a "knot" in your muscle. These are areas of muscles that contract and stay contract. They tend to hurt when someone works on them, but if rubbed and worked on enough, it can loosen up.

In the mean time, do not do anything that causes you to aggrivate your shouldler. Try to pay attention to your daily routine and everything you do and see if there might be something that you can change to keep it from causing you any more problems. If it's sitting differently or sleeping in a different position.

If it's not your actual muscle that's causing the soreness, but a joint ache instead, you'll need to see a doctor.

You might have just strained it a little bit from probably using the right more than the left. Just make sure you rest it and stretch it out better before you bench. Make sure your not lifting too much either. And make sure you are benching correctly.
