Greek gods originated from Roman gods. The Romans liked to collect gods from the people they conquered.
"The original religion of the early Romans was modified by the addition of numerous and conflicting beliefs in later times, and by the assimilation of a vast amount of Greek mythology."

The Greeks were a culture several hundred years before the Romans were. The Romans loved Greek culture and besides copying their art and sculptures, they also annexed their religion and made it their own by renaming and developing the gods and the mythology. They also incorporated whatever they liked about other relegions they came across as they conquered. So you could say the Roman gods were based off of the Greek gods.

The Greek civililzation peaked about 300 B.C. Later the Romans conquered the Greeks and took over their pantheon (all their gods) but gave them Roman names. Thus Artemis became Diana, Aphrodite became Venus, Ares became Mars, and Eros became Amor or Cupid whose power we are about to celebrate once again.
