i never even thought of Yale or Harvard as choices for my degree. They don't have an engineering school to speak of. I did, however, think of MIT. But that was simply too high-brow for me. I stuck with state schools. I applied to ONE private university, and was put on a waiting list. I ended up with a degree that is useful, complete, respected, and above all got me the job that I wanted and currently hold.

Because they are, by everybody's standard, the best schools in US and the world. All of the Ivy League schools are. (Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Columbia and U.Penn). They have the highest ratings in the world. PLus Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, Duke, MIT, etc. They are the most selective schools and they have the biggest endowments. Best facilities, best faculty, best scholarship grants, best and brightest students, and, who can forget the highest tuition fees. Need I say more?
Harvard is No. 1 in the World's 500 Best Universities list, followed by Oxford and Cambridge and Stanford, MIT....
Personally, I think those schools are overrated. I would rather have a smaller class and establish a (friendly) personal relationship with my professors. That way you can shine in your school, and not be just one of the faceless crowds in those large universities. There are plenty of excellent small private colleges with sufficient financial aid. It's just a matter of preference really.

I don't think EVERYONE wants to go there, but alot of people do because they are prestigious and have good academic programs.
