I'm looking to remodel a bathroom and rip out an existing tub and put in a shower stall in stead...With the extra space from the shower stall, I would like to move the toilet beside the new shower stall...I have 6 feet total on the wall to work with...Assuming I want a decent amount of space in the shower (36-42 inches square), would that make the area for the toilet along the same wall too small?

for a toilet installation you need a minimum of 15" from the center of the toilet to any side obstruction. so basically you need a 30" opening to install a toilet. I'd recommend 36" tho, 30 is kind of tight for a "larger" person. you also need a minimum of 18" from the front of the toilet to any obstruction.

Space Toilet

My humble suggestion would be to put in a corner-angled shower with the door in the centre of the angle. You can easily fit a toilet beside it, lean and wipe (as an earlier answer so eloquently described it) and not feel confined. The angle showers have all glass around them. The "visual" is non-confining. As long as you can fit in the space (I am guessing even a very large person is only twice the width of a toilet) and it isn't "visually confining thus making it stressful to enter"; you should be real good for space with 6 feet. Bear in mind the toilet will protrude from the wall further into the room than an angled shower stall in that the door is on a 45 degree at the front so the side glass wall (beside the toilet) is only about 18" protruding into the room. Make the shower 42" wide max. from the corner to the glass, the rest for the toilet space. Good Luck!

Code is 30" minimum for toilet, with a 42" square you barely made it, consider placement of paper holder, comfort, appearance, the 36" would be better. You have to visualize the layout to your subjective taste, it will look a bit unusual. Just an aside, I'm assuming you have another tub in the house, value of house could drop without tub. Good Luck.

Yes I believe you will have plenty of room that is if you are planning on putting the tank of the toilet parallel to the 6 foot wall. You want to be comfortable space use at least a min of 32 inches of space for the toilet and at least 24 inches of clear floor space in front of the toilet.

National Code requires 30 inches but if you live in a large city it could be different meaning more than 30 inches. Cities cannot go less than Code, if they have adopted the National Code which most all do. They however can increase the numbers. I'm not sure of how your measurements are to be figured but do what is comfortable for you. The worst thing you can do is under build...

I'll concur with the plumbers as you need a minimum width of 30" in the clear with the toilet centered in that space.
