This is a common mis-conception,i.s.p,s will promise you up to(thats were they get you"up to")8mb
by saying up to 8mb they can mean anything from 512kb to 7mb,your actual speed depends on certain factors such as 1.distance from local telephone exchange 2.network traffic (people on-line)
i have 2 methods of speeding up your broadband speed, the first is pretty simple
unplug your router modem from the plug socket and wait for 30 seconds, then plug it back in and if you have a wireless association button at the back of your router press it in for 15 seconds and release, otherwise just let the router go back to normal
after a rest(cold boot) your router will be slightly faster,i dont know why this works ,it just does,i normally do it around once a month
the second method is using a excellent download manager called "gigaget download manager" avalible from http://www.download.com/Gigaget-Download-Manager/3640-2071_4-10503295.html
this is a safe download manager that increases your download speed by downloading your programs from several locations instead of one location thus increasing the overall speed
i have a normal downlaod speed of 500kbps but using "gigaget" i get a download speed of around 800kbps
all files downloaded with "gigaget" are saved to a folder called"tddownload" in your c drive
i hope this has helped you
good luck

If you are connecting via an extension try connecting via your main phone socket, that may well speed things up a bit.
