I have a Canadian Passport and I'm planning to do a backpacking trip to Europe next summer including ten different countries. I know that there's a law right now where tourists can't stay over 90 days in the Schengen area. are they really strict on that? What happens if they find out that you've been staying a little over the 90 days? Do they check your length of stay at the airport when you leave? Thank you very much!

3 months is the maximum, not just in schengen but in nearly all EU states. They aren't that strict but you may get a strict border officer who will get you for it. It used to be that you could just get out of the EU for a day and then get back in for another three months but now it is getting hard to find a non EU or affiliated country to do this with. Try popping into Belarus or Kaliningrad for a day then you'll get another three months. trouble is you'll need a visa for that and it would be cheaper just getting a schengen visa. You can ask for an extension of stay and they will most probably give it to you when you arrive.

Not sure how strict they are or whether they check passports on the way out.

However, what you do is stay in the Schengen region for 90 days. On the 90th day, head to a non Schengen European country such as the UK. Visit the UK and apply for another Schengen visa whilst in London.
