Take a glass of water mixed with 1/4 cup of white vinegar and put it in the microwave in a microwave-safe dish. Run the microwave for about 8-10 minutes. As the water boils the steam will coat the inside of the microwave, loosening up any and all dirt. Simply take a sponge and wipe it out afterwards.
This method is not only very effective but it is environmentally friendly. You won't end up with the smell or taste of chemicals either.
If you find the smell of vinegar unpleasant, put a glass of water with cinnamon or lemon juice, herbs, spices, whatever you prefer, and boil for 8-10 minutes.
I usually do this every other week, unless it gets dirty sooner.

Sunny recommended something like what I have done in the past.
Only, unlike him, I recommend you fill a bowl or a glass part way with a mixture of water and Fantastic (or 409, or Windex even.) Make it a 50/50 mix. Nuke it for a few minutes. But make sure you don't leave it go so long that the liquid boils off completly, it's bad for the mic to run it with nothing inside.
The steam and Fantastic will cover the inside of the mic. Just wipe down with a sponge or paper towel.
As for the smell, it will go away on it's own after a few days. Think of that bad smell as the microwaves way of punishing you for over cooking the pretzel.
Hope that helps.

try this - worked for me on an old uncleaned microwave :
take a glass of water - fill it up with water upto 3/4 of the way.
put it in the microwave and turn it on at high for about 6-7 minutes or even longer till the water boils. this will cause the steam to loosen the dirt thats in there. take a clean soft cloth and wipe it clean - repeat as necessary. dont use chemical cleaners in there - LOL
Cheers and take care

Take a glass of water and put some baking soda in it, and place it in the microwave. Heat it to just a boiling point. The vapors from the mixture will loosen up the grime and the baking soda will absorb the smell

I am in the cleaning business and here is our secret!
We buy this cleaning cloth off the internet. You have to buy in packages of 5 but they are only like $3 bucks a piece. I have ordered them and use them on everything, especially cleaning windows and clean mirrors. They are made out of tiny fibers. They are guaranteed not to scratch and all you do is rinse the cloth under water, wring it out and wipe ANY surface with no streaks or scratch. Use em over and over. I have not thrown one away yet!
I am sold on this ...I encourage you to try it out….hope this helps…Steve
