Not necessarily. The "Check Engine" light on the dash board (and this applies to pretty much all cars) simply means the on board computer registered a inequality of information from a sensor. I have seen guys replace the oxygen sensor and the light goes out, but that is strictly dumb luck. Take your car to any parts store and they should have a reader that will tell you which sensor set off the light. Note: replacing the suspect sensor may not repair the problem, sometimes there is a problem somewhere with the system.

Probably not. The most likely culprit would be a plugged egr port in the intake manifold. Very common for that engine of that year. Only way to know for sure is to pull a code with a scanner - but you should leave the repairs up to a qualified audi mechanic. Volkswagen can fix this car for you as well (same as a passat).
