We owe the celebration of Black History Month to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. The scholar was disturbed to find in his studies that history books largely ignored the black American population-and when blacks did figure into the picture, it was generally in ways that reflected the inferior social position they were assigned at the time.
Woodson chose the second week of February for ***** History Week because it marks the birthdays of two men who greatly influenced the black American population, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Also February 3, 1870:
The 15th Amendment was passed, granting blacks the right to vote.
February 12, 1909:
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded by a group of concerned black and white citizens in New York City.

It should be celebrated all year long. We didn't make history just in the shortest month of the year,we made history all year long.
And they need to talk about more than slavery and civil rights.
I want to hear about the Moors who ran Italy for a while and other history like it. More on Black inventors would be nice too.

If there is anything historically noteworthy about Blacks it should be included in general history. Some of the things they teach as "Black history" are downright comical. Equality means being included just like everyone else--not being considered special.

Nitebug: You might be thinking about the Saracens who invaded Spain in the eighth century.

We celebrate it because of all the stuff that african americans have had to go through. Being slaves from almost the discovery of our country to 1865. Then still being treated badly after slavery ended, with laws not letting them vote or have rights. All the segregation before and now african americans are just people, so we celebrate to show how far they have far and how hard they fought.
