I prefer to use nails myself. I think it makes the picture hang that much better ;)

Well I sleep on a mattress but I use nails for everything else.

The mattress.. you can prop the picture against it, but you can't go to sleep on a nail!

I have hammered a mattress, but never tried sleeping on nails.

yes, it very much depends on whether I am hoping for a good night's sleep or trying to knock two pieces of wood together.
For hanging pictures I agree that nails are definitely better than a mattress
