Man, that's a good question. I see "Alien" in the list, but I think the sequel, "Aliens" -- is better.
Then again, I might call "Aliens" the best action movie ever, too. Not sure if it's sci-fi or action.

Metropolis - 1927, Fritz Lang. A movie that can stand the test of time the way this can and still have bearing on today's society - that's pretty amazing.

Starship Troopers - Verhoeven/Heinlein
Fahrenheit 451 - Bradbury
Videodrome - Cronenburg
The Matrix - first mainstream go at cyberpunk
The Day the Earth Stood Still - klaatu barata niktu!
The Twilight Zone tv series - well, most of it....
And Zardoz is a lost gem! That giant floating head is awesome. And Charlotte Rampling is in it...
Finally, yet again, STAR WARS is NOT science fiction.

I don't think i have ever watching a sci-fi film i didn't like. But my favourite would be a cross between the original star wars and aliens..

For me, it is, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, I remember seeing it at the cinema for the first time and the scene where the alien spaceship hovered over the table top mountain was awesome, the whole story came together with a terrific ending.

There are not many good sci fi.'s made, but because no one has ever made a movie with two realitys, like people live in their anger as well as their calm.
I'd have to say one real one not.
Like when people commit crime its not who they really are, but what they have capacity to do.......the Matrix. an the first was the best although I like the other two as well
