I would not be suprised if they did it because of people using copyrighted stuff for their avatar.
Of course, it could also be a glitch.
My personal favorite involves a conspiracy theory involving UFOs upset about the fake moon landing at Roswell that was set up to stop people from paying attention to the JFK assassination.
