It's all the fluid inside, but my doctor has told me that he can "hear" the baby moving, so perhaps the sounds could also be the baby swooshing around the amniotic fluid as well. Don't worry if you're not sure, because I'm sure a lot of people don't know for certain unless they have a medical degree or have asked their doctors.

It should be the heartbeat. My doctor told me my baby's heartbeat sounded like a horse the other day and he started making galloping noises....I think it is about time my doctor takes a vacation!
The placenta does not make noises but there is a lot of fluid in there with the baby that swishes around.

The "swooshing" you are referring to is the sound of the placenta, which does make a noise at it goes about its important work of feeding and nurturing your baby through the umbilical cord.

the doppler heartbeat thing uses sounds waves to detect the heartbeat. there for just like with a submarine its going to make the swooshing sound.
if you use an at home heartbeat monitor not the doppler one you might hear swooshing which is passing nutrients.

some of the swooshing you're hearing is from the amniotic fluid, but a lot is probably from your own blood swishing through your veins. It kinda sounds like a milkshake being sucked through a straw to me... The heartbeat should be a little more defined, like a thumping.

I think it is the heartbeat and the fluids moving all around. I only recall hearing the heartbeat. That was all I paid attention to. I love that sound!

My doctor said it's lost of things from my heart rate, to the baby moving, you have tons of stuff going on with out the baby as well. Your stomach is digesting food, etc. It's fun to hear it. They sell an awesome teddy bear that plays those sounds so it can sooth the baby after birth! I am looking into purchasing one (just an FYI)
27 weeks with my first!

It's the heartbeat along with the all the fluid and the sounds of the ultrasound waves bouncing back. (I think) Whatever it is, it's so nice to hear it!

When I heard the noice I made a weird look, and my dr just smiled and told me the baby was moving.
