The loud ones pick a side. The rest of us critical thinkers are in the background, laughing.

It really isn't that case.
There are plenty of people on Yahoo! Answers that have legitimate and sensible political beliefs. They just do not speak as loudly or angrily about the subject matter.
Mainly it stems from a lack of age. Young people (especially children) have been brought up in a certain way and have a difficult time grasping non-concrete concepts, and so they tend to swing drastically in one direction of the political slant. They are also the same ones who run around spamming things like "LIBERALS SUCK" and "BUSH SHOULD DIE ON FIRE".
I, for one, love discussing politics, but the amount of rude and ignorant response I see on Yahoo! Answers makes me want to shy away from engaging in any debate on it.
I happen to fall precariously from the position of supporting virtually all of the Republican ideas on economics but none on their social ones. Were the Republican party still in the same stride as the pre-Reagen administration Republican party I would probably be a full suporter. In fact, I would argue that Nixon was one of the best progressive presidents we've had in the past 40 years!
But that's life. The most fanatical of the pack will always be the ones whose voice is heard.

Sure there are overlapping beliefs. But most people have a leaning a little more one way than the other. Major difference between Libs and Conservatives is Libs like to rely on government a lot. Conservatives are more self-reliant. At least that's the way I see it. There will rarely be common ground that all people stand on, even within those two ideologys.

Lots of us have mixed beliefs. I feel very strongly about a lot of conservative issues, but I also have some very liberal points of view.
Don't think everyone behaves like people on YA - I have a ton of friends who I disagree with, but we have great political conversations because we *respect* each other. We all know that the other isn't just reacting on emotion, but has actually bothered to read up on the issues a bit.

Almost everyone has mixed beliefs at some point on some issue. It's human nature to believe that you are right, and aligning yourself with a political party provides strength in numbers to allow one to believe they are winning something by claiming I'm a this and I'm better than that.

First, I don't think it's true. I think most people have mixed beliefs. I think many people are confused or ignorant.
The problem is that we're asked to choose sides. We don't vote for issues, we vote for people.
When someone votes for George W. Bush, they can't vote "yes" for war but "yes" for gay marriage. It's a package.
It's rather common to have someone say that they are a fiscal conservative and a social liberal, for example.

We're not. I'm Independent because I support the person, not the party. My views are mixed, nothing is black or white but some come close. Party mentality is the same as herd mentality in my book.

You too can register as an Independent just as I have. But this is a political forum and opinions will be voiced.
