If anything, the black dilemma in this country has shown us that people of any color and creed can recognize injustice and rally to erradicate it. If black history month is a reminder to the world of such a victory than it deserves a place on the calendar, but it should be used as a platform for humanity, not just "blacks", otherwise it is just another kind of injustice.

That is a great question.
I live in Mississippi, and a lot of the old people around here can tell ya stories about how separated the black people were from all the other people....especially the white people.
So just going on the old stories I've heard, black people may have a whole month of appreciation in America when other races don't because they took a LOT more crap in America than all the other races. It's sooo obvious why there's not a white history month, but what about native american history month? Now THAT race has taken a lotta crap in America too.

We owe the celebration of Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of black history, to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. He found that history books largely ignored the black American population-and when blacks did figure into the picture, it was generally in ways that reflected the inferior social position they were assigned at the time.
Woodson chose the second week of February for ***** History Week because it marks the birthdays of two men who greatly influenced the black American population, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

The question should be... Why do we have a black history month, compared to all the other different types of people in this country. Its because the blacks keeps making the whites feel sorry for their ancestors acts. If anyone should have their on month it should be the Native Americans.

Because the rest of the months are white history month. Whites pretty much have had their way for so long, its just a way to acknowledge that many black americans have had a hand in history as well. The reason that black colleges, black miss america, and many other things that many complain about were created because blacks didn't have opportunities to go to college or be miss american..etc etc. I mean the list is huge but its goes along the same reasons.

I'm getting sick and tired of this question.
Black History month is to celebrate black culture. It also is to show how far black people have come. We've been through a lot! (Well, not my family because they are not americans.) Whites tortured us for years. We were made slaves and segregrated. We've faced racism for so many years.
Racism is not gone at all. (Go to the yahoo! homepage and read about the "whistle blower" under the "popular questions" tab) But at least segregation is.
I definetly see why white people can get offended by this month. THey are angry that they can't participate or feel that it is unfair. I can see how you think it is unfair to single out one race and give them their own month. I can NOT see why people get all angry about it and start calling black people the N word.
That's why I sometimes think this month just starts trouble. Other races(usually white people) get angry about it. Well once you white people are unable to find a job because of your race, are thought to be poor as soon as you walk in a store, or have a hate group after you, I'll start feeling sorry for you

well probably because blacks were treated so terribly before the civil war and back then blacks were thought as people who were stupid , and only good for backbreaking work. and in spite of that they have become great at any jobs whites can do , but i don't think its right i mean its nothing special that a black person can do what a white person can, i think its making fun of them you know ,and acting like a black person is someone dumb and if they can do something like become a doctor or a writer they make it a huge deal . But hey society is not in anyway perfect

Because it would not be fair to remind everyone that white people have a history too. Everything used to be "separate but equal", and now it is "different but better". Why do we call black americans "African-Americans" and if I insist on being called a "German-American" or a "caucasian-American" I am laughed at, or called a racist?

because its to celebrate how far the black race has come from oppression and segregation and all the problems they have faced that is why there isn't a white history month because society always made them superior and have never been subjected to torment just for the color of their skin.

I gotta agree with phoenix, your entire high school social studies class from 10 to 12 is the history of Europe AKA the white mans homeland. Also, whites have never realy been a minority with a rapidly assimilating culture among a black majority. We (myself also) don't have to worry about our history dissapearing to obscurity any time soon, but other cultures do, and it is a source of both anger and pride to celebrate one's origins.
