thats a really good question....i wish i had a really good answer for you....but....here's what i think...i think that the society we live in has pretty much conditioned the way in which we view ourselves...(both men and women)...and we have accepted..this conditioning as fact...and so women who compare themselves to the images that are considered beautiful ...fall short...or think that they do....

Low self-esteem plus there's always the insecurity the next woman will be even more beautiful than you. Some 'beautiful' women are so full of the artifice themselves, the 'it's all about me' syndrome'. Never quite perfect enough to fill their 'ugly pit' of doom.
Their fragile and skin deep prettiness dissolving and devolving like the evil witch from Oz!

You've met all the wrong women. I amy not be the knock-out heart-stopping head-turner that you reference above, but I am confident and comfortable, and I can tell you that I am beautiful as well.
Additionally, if a woman is ONLY beautiful (meaning she is only beautiful in the physical sense), the flaws she knows exist on the inside may warp her perception of the image in the mirror.

Sometimes it's a way of fishing for compliments and having someone argue that they're beautiful. But also a lot of insecurities come from relationships gone wrong. I sometimes feel I'm not attractive even though I have male and female friends that tell me I'm beautiful. I sometimes think it's just because they love me. It's something you have to deal with in your own way.

They are expected to be. It's the lesser of two evils when compared to vanity and arrogance, but it's still annoying.
Try watching an episode of friends. It doesn't make sense for Jennifer Anniston to complain about being fat, but her character does, which makes no DAMN sense.

Those that think they are, have some self esteem or body image issues often from beauty magazines & the myths portayed of what women are suppossed to be & what they are told men want. Sad isn't it?
