On the web - go to The Million Dollar Home Page ( http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/ ) The author got the idea of making a 1000x1000 web page and selling it at $1/pixel to advertisers. The publicity he got made it a good buy, and the page is still up. You can see just what one million pixels look like.
I think he ended up selling all the pixels, and actually earned one million dollars from it. Neat idea.

Find a pond. Preferably one with lots of algae and stinky. Dip a clear glass into the pond Look at the water. There are at least one million organisms in that water. Take a drop of the water and put it on a slide under a microscope. You'll see several hundred bacteria and protists.

Actually, in downtown Las Vegas, at the Horseshoe casino, they used to have a display of 1 million one dollar bills. I assume it is still there.

I once went to a museum in London, can't remember which but probably the science museum, which had a display of a million tiny little lights, there was way too many to look at in one go.

Good luck with one million. Last I heard, people couldn't conceptualize any number larger than 7.
It's a very interesting problem, however, and if you asked the right crowd, you could get some very creative and innovative answers.

Most of the time because we read it all the time, we take it for granted!
If it was to be comprehended, i'd look at it as one year of no. of clicks of the mouse (by normal usage)
or the number of characters in all the text books a read in a year!

First of all, who's they? I don't agree at all. I have a way of comprehending 1 million of something.
Ok, this is extremely tough to do. I am not kidding, this takes probably an hour of ridiculously hard thinking. If you actually try this, then after you are done, you will be exhausted. Not just mentally, physically exhausted as well. If you ever can't get to sleep, this works great for tiring you out.
First, visualize 10 cookies sitting on a tray. Now, zoom out with your mind (like a camera) and imagine 10 trays. You now have 100 cookies. Now, zoom out again and imagine 10 large trays made up of 10 regular trays. This is 1000 cookies. Now, zoom out again and imagine 10 extra-large trays that are made up of 10 large trays. This is 10000 cookies. Now, zoom out again and imagine 10 king-size trays that are made up of 10 extra-large trays. This is 100000 cookies. Now, imagine 10 extra-king size trays that are made up of 10 king size trays. This is one million cookies. This part is fairly simple, you only have 10 objects in your mind at this point (all trays). Now perform the following steps:
1) Focus so that each tray in your mind contains ten trays.
2) Repeat step one five more times until you can visualize individual cookies.
Now here's the trick. After you have made a new set of trays come into focus, allow the bigger tray to disappear. Group the trays in groups of ten. When you get to individual cookies, the cookies will be grouped in groups of ten of groups of ten of groups of ten of groups of ten of groups ten.
It's actually really all a trick because you are looking at only ten things at a time, but if you look at many groups of ten of groups of ten and so on, then you can visualize a million things.
