It has to do with how its mowed as mentioned earlier. But it also has to do with the different types of grass on the field. Different types have different colors, giving them different looks for the patterns.

It is a combination of the direction they mow the grass and the blade height. Sometimes its painted too.

they use 2 or 3 different lawnmowers. they set the level of how far the blade is from the ground, so the grass is cut at 2 or more different heights. that enables the grounds crew to make any pattern they want.

Anyway, the secret is the roller on the back of the mower. When the grass is bent away from you, the grass appears brighter. When the grass is bent toward you, the grass appears darker.
