I love gnocchi and pasta, but is there anything really different at an Italian restaurant that I should try?

It depends where is the restaurant.I'm Italian but if the restaurant
is abroad, I mean not in Italy, I really don't know.
I used to travel a lot in the past and after a few disillusions I had stopped going to the Italian restaurants outside of Italy.
Their cooking has nothing to be compared with the restaurants here in Italy....!! If you instead mean an Italian restaurant here in Italy you might stick a pin in a menu and any dish you'll hit will be for you a pleasant surprise...!! If you find (since they're not that common everywhere) I suggest you to try the "lasagne alla bolognese" (also called "lasagne al forno"). Here is a link with a few pics.

Try cannelloni - to die for!

Cannelloni are large tubes of pasta or crepes stuffed with something, baked, and covered with a sauce. Here's an example from a local restaurant I love:

Cannelloni Alla Florentina
Crepes of Pasta Filled with Spinach and Ground Veal, Baked with Cream Sauce

I've had them prepared in different ways in Italy and in USA and they were always very good.

If you're not a veal or meat eater you could try risotto - as long as it's authentic and prepared from scratch - which takes a little time.

I usually get veal parm, but my dad prefers marsala. Chicken francaise is good if you like lemon.
