Depo Provera does not contain estrogen which is the hormone needed to complete the menstrual cycle. It is made with synthetic progesterone - and the amount in each 3 month shot keeps your ovaries from producing eggs, i.e. keeping you from having a period.

Birth control pills contain varying amounts of estrogen to to stabilize the cycle while protecting from pregnancy.

Your periods stop on Depo because your ovaries go into a “resting state” while you are on Depo, and your body does not need to have a period. On the pill, your ovaries are still working, but the eggs aren't maturing and being released as normal.

Some women actually do still have a period while on depo. Irregular, heavy, or no bleeding are also common side effects of depo. Most women after a year of use stop having a period, but there are some who still have a period.
