Windows XP is probably the better choice. VISTA is both newer and more expensive. The most important new features of VISTA are security related. Playing games does not require much security.

Neither! Why give Billionaires more of your money, when you can get a superior product, such as Kubuntu (Linux), for free?
Kubuntu is virtually virus free, has other free software available with it, such as Open Office which Microsoft charges hundreds of additional dollars for their version.
If you MUST choose between XP or Vista, choose XP, because you are going to be frustrated with compatability and driver issues for your games and other hardware with Vista for about the next two or three years.
