Where did you learn about his having Syphilis? Aside from a common law wife with which he had two children and a bastard son who grew up to become the Royal Governor of New Jersey I never have heard about his contracting Syphilis.

Franklin had many close female friends but that doesn't mean he was doing them he was 70 years old when he was in France and I don't believe that he would be going to bed with any woman because, as a former English Civil Servant he would know that, she could have been a spy for any of the powers in Europe at the time.

He probably caught syphillis. He was such a "man-whore." He was a very self-absorbed man who was only interested in his studies while he was in Europe. If I'm correct, I think his wife was dying and he refused to return home, becasue his work in Europe wasn't done!
