most electronics stores sell a cable that runs from your headphone jack on your i pod to an audio input on your home stereo. if you want to run it to your car stereo you can get an fm transmitter.

It depends on what your stereo features, if it has a tape deck, you can buy a tape adapter and stick it in the stereo and hook up the plug to your iPod. Some stereos (especially newer ones) have a headphone jack (called the auxiliary jack) where you can use double ended headphone cables to directly hook up your iPod.
If your stereo has neither an auxiliary jack or a tape deck, you'll probably need to get a newer one to play your iPod on it.

the best thing to do is to get a Y Splitter from Best Buy or some other electronics store.

It plugs into your headphone jack, and splits off into the connections you can use in the back of your stereo, you know, the red and white audio-in connections?

That's probably the best way to do it.

You could also buy an fm-transmitter, and plug that into your headphone jack, but that's a lot more of a hassel, and only any good if you want to listen to it in your car.

Get an RCA audio cable (the one with the red and white plugs on one end). This will fit into the aux part of the stereo

Make sure the other end has a 3.5mm stereo plug. This will fit into the headphone jack on your ipod.

i've done this before. you need a 1/8" jack to RCA cable. You can hook the RCA audio jacks up to your stereo input.

Or, if you have an AV cable for your ipod, you could just use that and ignore the video jack (you got the audio jacks which is all you need). I haven't tried this before, but it should work in theory.
