I realize that most people think autism is genetic; are there any other factors that may contribute to it?

Autism is genetic, it is either already in the family, or caused by damaged sperm of an older father or maybe sperm damaged by toxins. It is best for you to avoid alcohol. drugs, medications, and eat well. Think good thoughts, enjoy your pregnancy and relax as much as you can. The autism epidemic has been expected by the researchers who know that, at a population level, it increases with paternal age.

Don't get the rhogam shot until after birth if you are RH- and obviously don't get your child immunized, but since you said you will do that regardless, there is nothing you can do to prevent autism if you are vaccinating a newborn child that hasn't even developed a fully functioning immune system with toxins. (read on Hep B vaccine side effects) If you "already know" what vaccinations could possibly cause you would also know they offer little immunization on top of that. I would suggest some serious research and maybe the book by Dr. Tim O'shea. The risk of severe problems is NOT high by not getting vaccines, but your childs risk of autism, cancer and auto-immune disorders is. That is your trade off...a low chance for mumps or measles vs. the 3 I just listed. Best wishes on whatever you decide!

Not that anyone can say for certain. Generally speaking, you should of course take care of your health and don't worry about things that are not in your control, like genetics. As far as mercury in fish and vaccinations, read up and weigh your risks/benefits. Keep in mind that there are millions of healthy kids out there who have been vaccinated and their mom's ate fish. There's still a lot science is still learning about autism. Increased awareness is good, but only as long as it doesn't cause people to worry unnecessarily!

It is genetic. At least that's what the best evidence from scientific studies (without motive) have shown. You can no more prevent autism than you can prevent dumb blondes who make stereotypical statements in a shallow attempt at humor...

I honestly don't know if autism is caused during gestation.

I know it is extremely important not only to take prenatal vitamins while pregnant, but also months before you you get pregnant.

So many birth defects can be prevented with simple vitamins.

Don't get any vaccines with mercury in them (flu, the RH factor one) and don't eat any fish with mercury (tuna, shark, tilefish, swordfish). Best of luck!

don't spin any plates or fling any string. And please, no complicated mathematical equations or card counting. You should be just fine.

Oh, you meant in the baby? No.
