Originally it was the pagan holiday Lupercalia, during which men and women flirted and then fell in love. Then the Pope (hundreds of years ago) decided to celebrate the lives of the Saints Valentine (there were two). Sorry for the history lecture. Now we celebrate a mixture of the two as a holiday for lovers.
