We never had a shoes off rule growing up. I just recently (last week) put in to effect our no shoes in the house rule, and the way I did it was, I had off white carpet installed and made really nasty threats to my family, so they really don't have a problem with it.
The rule applies to everyone who enter the areas where the new carpet is, and so far all of our guests have SEEMED happy to oblige.

My friend just had all of the wood floors striped and refinished. They are beautiful and scratch free and need to stay that way. So, the no shoes in the house rule was made. This is what was done before anyone came over. A large shoe tray was purchased and put by the door for shoes. Then a trip to the store to buy a dozen thick and comfy socks was the next stop. Now, the house was ready for company. When people arrived, they were asked to take their shoes off and if they wanted, to put on a pair of socks. There was a basket by the door with colorful and funky socks that people actually enjoyed wearing. Do you know that 80%, yes 80% of the dirt on your floors come from shoes? Yup, that's right.

I started my shoes off rule when I bought my new house with hardwood floors and white carpeting. I did not have a shoes off rule growing up it was something that I adopted later in life. In my house everyone has to take their shoes off no execptions. What I did to start up having a shoes off house was I made sure I had an entry to accomodate it. We have a large entry with a rug and bench. Our family does not need the bench to sit down as we just kick our shoes off so easily that we do not need to bend over. Just having a pile of shoes at the door really clues people into the shoes off rule. We have only walked around the house in socks or barefeet and our floors look as good as new. Shoes off in the house is the way to go.

Get everyone in the house together and let them know that there is now a no shoes rule in the house. Have a shelfcase or a cabinet for guests that come over to put their shoes, put a sign by your front entry that there is a no shoes rule. It applies to every person that comes into your house. (NO Exceptions)

When I spent a few thousand dollars on perfect new carpet I started a no shoes house rule. It applies to everyone, no one is exempt. I want my carpet to stay stain free. I think people get it when they see a pile of shoes at the front door, or I yell at them if they are oblivious to it.
Good luck
Remember, a sign works too! :)

I think that having a few shoes lined up at the door gives a big hint and that's what i do, when everyone else enters they automatically take their shoes off.

Here in Canada, we take our boots off at the door in winter to avoid leaving snow on the floor all through the house. The kids here today don't wear boots in the winter and apparently prefer wet cold feet (HUH?!) but the habit is formed early in life with our four distinct seasons... the summer is the tough one with little Johnny "just running in for a minute for a glass of water..." GET 'EM OFF!!!! :) Be dilgent and persistant
Good Luck!

started the day we replaced the carpet. problem is that even when kids aren't wearing shoes they are wearing dirty socks or have dirty feet and it tracks in the dirt just as fast as if you had shoes on. Same problem if you have animals.

you just tell whoever is in your house to take off their shoe, if it is your kid who doesnt do it then punish him/her. and if they dont learn dont let them go in the house or let them go somewhere without their shoes. it always works for me
