What I've read is that if you have a 28 day cycle you can count back 14 days from when your next period would be. So sex from day 10-14 could result in pregnancy since sperm can live for a few days.
Also, you can check your cervical mucus (vaginal discharge) I never really paid attention to that, and then when I did , there was a huge change in it. It will be thick and stringy and when you ovulate it changes to egg white consistency, thin and clear.
It's not the safest method to not get pregnant, so be careful!!

It's never safe to have sex without good protection.

Your ovary releases an egg once a month usually mid cycle. If it is not fertilized with sperm, it disintegrates and you get a period. The egg "lives" for a few days and sperm can live for several so it's almost impossible to know when it is safe.

I'd say that it's probably best to have sex sorta in the middle of your last period and your next one. But if you're not married than you should really wait until then because if you get pregnant even if it's unexpected things will be alright.
