I want to stay on the coast. I have a profession that is easy to find a new job. I just don't want to live here anymore. How and when do I start looking to find a nice place with a lower cost of living for me and my family? I don't plan on leaving until the summer of 2009.

Get a map of the east coast and list the small towns along the coast where you'd like to live. Most of the towns will have websites. Pick a town, then look up its website for pictures, culture, activities, and such. That should help a little. Cheers! and Good luck with our futre move.

Sounds like an adventure in the making. Since you have the time, I would recommend taking several family vacations up the coast over the next few months/years. Now may be a good time to buy if you can afford it and hopefully 2+ years from now will be a bit of a better time to sell - but that is all a bit of a guess anyhow.

I like the map idea and the website. But I would try to narrow it down to a few areas and visit. Try to stay somewhere so that you can mingle with the locals and see if you like them and ask them questions. Visit the schools for your children (if need be), do the things you would want to be doing on a regular basis - not just while on vacation.

Most importantly, have fun doing it!

Best of luck!
