I've had both good and bad experiences with both companies but have been able to work them out for the most part.
The worst part about eBay was the canned responses that I received from their Customer Service and Tech Support reps. Even though I would take great care in giving them the information they would need to troubleshoot my problem, they would send an obviously canned response that indicated to me that they did not even READ my e-mail. That annoyed me to the max. They have taken great strides recently to improve, but are still far behind, in my opinion, for such a "world class" corporation, in their attempts at achieving world class customer service.
I've been buying and selling on eBay for the past 6 years now and if you are in this to make a killing or for the quick bucks, forget it! If you want to start a business and grow it, you can get a good start and for little overhead to boot!
You can obtain an eCommerce Internet presence by opening a basic eBay store for $15.95 a month and stock it for $.05 per item a month. You want to list at least 35-40 items to make it worth your while, but you can have any amount in there - from 1-100,000,000!
You don't necessarily need PayPal, but it is a big selling point - people feel safer trading with sellers who accept PayPal. There are fees associated with every transaction, but when you base the cost of doing business in a regular b&m (brick and mortar retail) store, you'll find that doing business on eBay/PayPal is really reasonable comparatively to what you'll need to come with for a start up venture!
You can just accept just personal checks and money orders, but many people tend to look at these sellers as scammers. There have been too many people who have listed items, accepted payment and not delivered the items on eBay.
Please use the FREE resources on eBay, don't buy into the myriad "How to sell on eBay" eBooks and courses as that is where THEY got their information.....and on the Community Boards as well!

I have had a couple of bad experiences on eBay, but for the most part it's been good. I have bought a lot of things off eBay.
PayPal is great... never an issue with them.
Tips:
--When shopping on eBay, I will no longer purchase anything from anyone who refuses to use PayPal. I got scammed from someone who would only take money orders.
--Always look at the seller's ratings before you put in a bid. It helps to be cautious!

It's getting better, any problems in the past took an eternity to sort out, page after page of erroneous instructions, designed to make you give up, and trying to contact ebay forget it, it appeared ebay was too intent on making money, than to worry about people with problems, or come to that, people who were being scammed.sending brass for gold was one!! Pay pal, yes, quite a few problems with that, same story there took some sorting out, telling the seller that the item had been paid for when it hadn't for instance, which was only sorted because the buyer was honest enough to pay up eventually. Take care, and keep on the ball at all times is my advice !

My experience with Ebay has generally been good. Paypal, however has some SERIOUS servicing problems. If everything goes good with Paypal, then it is okay but expensive. But, when things go wrong with Paypal, and they do, count on it taking forever, or even longer, for them to resolve your problem.

Hi. I have bought on e-bay and bought and sold on half.com, a subsidiary of e-bay. Most of my experiences have been good. There was one seller that did not ship the purchased item and it took a while to get that worked out, but it was resolved, finally.
Paypal is what I prefer. My biggest complaint with paypal is that they want to debit your bank account and you have to go through extra steps to get the money charged to a credit card.
Basically very satisfactory dealings with all parties.

generally good, but they have a flaw in their feedback which allows the integrity of the feedback to be suspect.
if you rate someone bad for a good reason, that user will rate you bad. then ebay will send you something saying that if you want to have your bad feedback removed, retract what you said about the other person.
so you can't trust the feedback.

I use them both often and have had good luck. You just have to check your buyer or seller's rating and read what others have wrote and you will be fine.
