First off balck people are not "African-Americans" They are americans or not americans they just happen to be a different color is all.
Second i feel the reason for this is that black people have felt put down by society for to long, and they want another way of distinguishing themselves and making themselves different. I mean think about it If someone else has done it first wether they are hispanic white asian or indian what matters who the first of another race to do it was? Its because of the racila inequality that blacks faced in this country for a while and they are still "feeling" the need to be recognized in some way.

the reason is because blacks had to work harder to accomplish things and get recognized for it and when a white person does the same they get the award, if you watch TV you see more white shows than blacks, you see more whites than black actors and they can work on one film and get so much attention but when a black actor does so many films the one where he/she sells them self short they get attention. As ta black woman I'm tired of hearing slavery this, the white man that ,every person is accountable for there own actions that was years ago we wasn't even born then but we do have a constant reminder of that when we are still being called colored, *****, African American, I am American i was born in america not africa. You guys have white presidents but all of our leaders who could have been president was killed so if we are so damn equal then how come we can't run the world? we are separated because of fear of what we would become and that's equal to whites. were like a red sock mixed with white laundry, not suppose to mix because it makes a bad reaction that can't be reversed. I'm not racist but i believe that we would never be equal to whites because there are so many ignorant people in this world. you have so many first whites that you shouldn't have asked that ridiculous question.

No offense taken, it's a valid question. This is all due to Black Pride. There's nothing wrong with being proud to be black, black people have overcome serious obstacles and continue to do so. But the whole thing has gotten old...all the black colleges, black clubs, etc. It's 2007 for God's sake. I'm sick of the division and the double standards. White people would never get away with all that crap today, nor should they have gotten away with it from the beginning. Again, it's 2007 and we should be past all of this.

first of all, im sorry that most everyone sees in black and white.
and second, this country is predominantly white, and because of that, not many african americans have had the chance to hold a position of importance.personally, i think that os not the white americans saying that, but the african americans being proud to get so far in such short time. whites were already industrialized when we got to this country, and unfortunately much more advanced than most people in africa. my grandfather, who was an african american by marrige, always said that blacks learned so much so fast and noone even notices, so you should be proud to hear how far african americans have come.

well, if its the first person to ever do something and he is black he won't be known as 'the first black guy to walk on mars etc.' hell just be 'the first person to walk on mars' then maybe later there will be a 'first white person to walk on mars' etc. as long as people have their heads so far up their @$$ and really care about race there will always be these monikers. Even if we eventually forget about race, there will still be national origin, sex, sexual orientation and religious monikers. 'first Muslim in space' etc. 'first bipolar Lebanese transgendered homosexual Episcopalian woman astronaut...have we had that yet?' for some reason this matters, I use astronaughts as example because its the perfect platform. We know all about the background of astronaughts when they go into space, but no idea about the work they are doing. we hear the songs they sing about thier homeland etc. They show pictures of thier family, but that means nothing to the mission. they sell us the people. not the work...but really all that matters is that we get the work done. This is where we have our values twisted.
the person is capable of the job and focused on it. Unfortunately our society will be inundated with podium poodles, 'token' people and subjects of PR regardless of whatever the job is, will somehow probably work its way into the mix regardless of racial, religious, sexual orientation as some sort of side show highlight to distract from what is actually going on.
Ask me my lineage I will just say American. Ask me to identify myself racially I will put human. I refuse to be anyone's puppet for PR and surround myself with like minded individuals.

Cultural immersion. In this society most of the notable accomplishments were done by white, so it's superfluous to say this white person did it first. On the other hand if a black person did it first, it's an occurence outside the norm, so we make sure everyone notice this, and say this black person did it first.
Subsconsciously, we are speaking statistical language. Am I making sense?

Good question. How come, when the same thing happens to a woman, a Latino, a gay... well, you get the idea. I guess we've got a ways to go regarding eliminating racism, haven't we?

i know exactly what you mean. i think it may be because these people feel like they owe something to us after our ancestors being slaves and all that. really, i don't believe it is necessary. or perhaps others feel that blacks are not as capable as others (stereotype), but instead of looking at it as a negative thing we should just look at it as a positive and be proud.
