In a "free" society, shouldn't we have the right to smoke marijuana if we chose to do it, and we aren't harming anyone else?

Want to address a few of these answers, that I've received so far....
Domi- No response necessary
Can of Beans- No response necessary
gr8fuljimmy- If marijuana was legal, why do you think a pilot, or surgeon would be inclined to use it on the job? Generally, people in those professions don't sit around abusing drugs, or they wouldn't have gotten there in the first place. Alcohol, or prescription drugs would be much more likely to be abused. Kind of hard to smoke pot in a hospital or an airport.
wingshooter08- I don't know why you have to be so rude. Drinking and driving is a problem, so why not make booze illegal?
smartestmaninthehemsip- You're a smarta**, but at least you're a logical thinker.
ishmael #549- Yes, all drugs should be legal in a free society. Even Crack (which wouldn't have existed in the first place had cocaine been legal.)
shell- Smoking Pot doesn't make 1 mentally handicapped. Many productive people are pot smokers, or former pot smokers.

Woh Woh Woh, now you just hold it right there mister. You are attempting to inject a little bit of logic and sense into political matters. You should know by now that it does not work like that.
You see pharmaceutical companies would not want to compete with some readily available weed, because they know they'd lose. So what do they do? They along with people who think they know what is best for me pressure the government from all sides until the only thing the government can do is something illogical and nonsensical.
Can you imagine if it were a controlled substance say like alcohol or cigarettes how much money the government could make off its sale? I mean we could probably replace most if not all of the federal income tax with its sale.
However, this leads us to another dilemma. The government has never seen a dollar it doesn't like or can't spend so in actuality for all the social program do-gooders, it would probably help your cause for marijuana to be legal, because then there would excess money to spend on your idiotic and over-stretched programs.

But it is harmful to others and it is a drain on society.
For example, prolonged use of marijuana causes things like psychosis and basic retardation. Talk to someone from the 70s who smoked pot every day, they're retarded. And I'm not being funny -- I'm using the word retarded for want of a better word to describe their lack of any mental activity.
These retards are then unable to get jobs, so society has to pay taxes for their welfare, or they get health problems like throat cancer and our taxes go toward their medical treatment.
There are also many other problems that make marijuana the problem of an entire society, not just the user, such as smoking and driving, psychosis where the user says they were 'under the influence' and therefore unaware of their actions, and so forth.
Society needs to get rid of those damn ciggerette companies that sell cancer in a packet, not legalize yet another substance that will kill more people and f-up more lives.
Yes, occasional recreational use of marijuana does not always have the horrific effects those stupid government anti-drug commercials show on tv. Still, marijuana does increase the chance that something horrific will happen. Its like saying we should legalize drink driving because sometimes drunk drivers are able to make it home safe and therefore not harm others by crashing into them. As a society we know that drugs increase the risk of danger above an acceptable level.
Besides, a 'free' society does not mean you can do whatever you want because sometimes what you want to do interferes with what someone else does or does not want to do.

Would you board a commercial flight if you knew the pilot was taking pinch hits? Would you go into surgery knowing that your surgeon just snapped off a couple of bowls of Thai stick? Weed is a drug and the reason it is illeagal is to protect us from impaired people. Look around dude, we are sharing this planet together and some of us need to be sober. Keep it illegal. You can still smoke it now, why do you think being legal is going to make it better? Your high, and you don't think clearly. How old are you 20 or 21?

Good question Chip, I don't know the absolute correct answer to your question, but I do know that George Washington raised it and kept logs of it's resin content and potency, in fact at one time farmers were required by law to raise marijuana as a rotation crop. in the early 30s states started passing narcotics laws, and in many cases it just got "lumped in". People say its dangerous but to whom? It's no more dangerous to me than cigarettes, which are legal, and less of a danger to others than alcohol, which is legal. In fact, I see these new ads saying 1 in 3 reckless drivers tested positive for marijuana use. However, did the test say they were stoned at the time? No the test determines if you have THC in your system, so it could have been up to a month ago that the subjects smoked. Also a recent study showed that 1 in three Americans smoked, so if 1in 3 Americans smoke, and 1 in 3 reckless drivers smoke, then non marijuana smokers are just as dangerous as smokers. The reasons to legalize are endless. In fact I'm thinking of running for president, legalizing marijuana, and taxing it. Will be sold in packs of twenty, just like cigarettes, with a tax of $10 per pack. The major tobacco companies have equipment set aside already, I estimate that at a total price $20 per pack we could pay off the national debt in less than 1 year, and start the second year by cancelling income tax. Vote for Me!!! And as for Mr Shell I have smoked marijuana since the 70s and am having more than a little difficulty with you calling me a retard, please feel free to contact me anytime you feel you would like to engage me in a battle of wits. I'm certain that my being a smoker you will quickly bury me under a veritable barrage of rapier wit and scathing repartee but being a retard, I'm too stupid to know any better

You're only harming someone when you run into them with your vehicle because your judgment was impaired by smoking it......oh sorry i said judgment and we were taking about You....sort of an oxymoron, or just moron!

Right-wing, babysitting, I know what's best for you, politicians?
Alcohol destroys the human body a lot faster than marijuana does.
