You need to provide more specifics. There are like 4 types of AMD Athlon 64 3200s and about 6 different lines of P4s. However, in the broadest case, the only thing that is always true is that for the same amount of money (price you pay), the AMD chip is going to outperform any Intel chip that is a P4 or older. This is because AMD sets their prices to undercut Intel chips by a certain percentage. This is NOT true for the current dual core processors, however.

The AMD, easily.
I built my own PC, using Pentium 4 531 and cheap motherboard bundle, with 1GB of DDR400 RAM and using an nVidia GeForce 7100 GS graphics card, 40GB IDE drive and 250GB SATA drive, running Windows XP Pro. I was offered a secondhand Athlon 3200+ with a cheap motherboard for £85, so I sold the Pentium so I could try the AMD instead
My PC now flies- outperforming the previous spec by far

Well 3 ghz is a lot of horsepower, so in this case Pentium is the clear winner. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean that AMD sucks. I for once, have used both AMD and Pentium, and find AMD to be better in terms of performance. My desktop at home is a pentium 4 HT, with 3.19 GHZ, while my laptop is an AMD turion 64 with only 2 GHZ. Both computers have 1 gigabyte of RAM. However, my AMD has outperformed my desktop in many ways and it is much faster. What makes it more impressive that the AMD is running on my mobile machine, while my pentium is chilling inside desktop, ha!

Go for the Athlon. It is defo faster. Of course you'll have to take the motherboard into consideration as well but I've always preferred AMD over intel.

depends ... if ur doing a processor intensive task like converting a video to another format that takes an hour or so.. then the pentium would probably edge out the amd by a few minuets ... otherwise u would never notice the difference ... i would get the cheaper one myself ...

It all depends on what you are using it for. The AMD is set up more for gaming, so if you are a gamer, i would suggest the AMD.

If you are not sure then go for the Pentium. Some programs interrogate the processor to see what make and model it is and crash and burn if it is not a Pentium.
