through the Equal Opportunity Commission (EEOC), to be able to prosecute and punish businesses that require employees to speak English at the workplace?

Tim2Honor: I am not into the habit of posting false information. Here for you to read from the EEOC about what I wrote about violation of a person's rights if a business required a english speaking workplace. Read article VII of the discrimination act that was put into affect in 1964.

The pendulum has swung too far, hasn't it? Although the most qualified candidate, I was denied a federal job in the U.S. because I do not speak Spanish.

Why shouldn't a private business require their employees speak a certain language? How can you communicate with co-workers if you don't share a common language? Would you be in favor of the EEOC in prosocueting Spanish speaking businesses that don't hire English only speakers?

Edit - Your additional information clears up what you are talking about. What you meant was is it fair to make them speak ONLY English on the job. If that is the case I change my answer to no it is not, however ther law does not call it discrimination to require an employee to speak English to get the job.

I think until the Congress pass a law making a FOREIGN country's language (English..the language of England!) the "Official National Language" of the US, each case must be taken on its particular merits.

Any company that passes such a rule is probably entitled to do so, but why exclude people? It makes poor business sense!

It makes more sense to require your employees to speak Navaho, which is actually a National language! LOL...

I think that is crazy. What if those employees speaking another language are actually talking bad about customers and/or co-workers. The government should keep their noses out of businesses affairs.

It's a bad idea.

Asking people to speak English is not discrimination - it's making sure you can serve your customers! Should that be illegal now too?

I don't think it's true. I think having to speak English is a valid and legal requirement. never heard of this and know of many companies who do require English . . including the one I work for.

Where did you get your info?
