how do you balance the following:
___HNO3 + ___CaCO3 ----> ___CO2 + ___H2O +___ CaNO3

If you correct the formula for calcium nitrate to Ca(NO3)2 as was suggested, then it will be
2HNO3 + 1 CaCO3 ---> 1 CO2 + H2O + Ca(NO3)2

You've got the wrong formula for thelast product. Calcium nitrate will have the formula Ca(NO3)2. When you fix that, it's easy to balance.

You've got 1 C on both sides, so those are OK. You'll now have 2 NO3- ions on the right, so you need two HNO3 on the left. That makes one water, and so all's balanced.
