The Vietnam war was the single most shock to the heart of America. A generation of young men were annihilated in a foreign war in a foreign land, thousands more were turned into drug addicts, from both medical and illegal use of drugs. The soldiers who returned were treated badly by their government especially the ones who had lost limbs or who had suffered `battle fatigue`. The war cost the American tax-payer more money than any previous conflict, in their history. It could all have been avoided, if the American government had not interfered in the politics of another country.
The only thing that could be salvaged from it, was the lesson to be learned, so that such a catastrophe would never be repeated. Yet here they are again, interfering in another country's` politics. Awaiting the annihilation of the sons and grandsons of the Vietnam survivors. To fight a war to defend your homeland is understandable, but these soldiers don`t know what they are doing in someone elses` war in someone elses` land.
Learn the lesson of Vietnam ! This is not a war that can be won. To win a war you must know who your enemy is, how can this be done when they do not wear uniforms ? When a woman pushing a pram has a bomb in it instead of a baby ?
Bring your soldiers home now, before history repeats its`self.

Your parallels are pretty shaky. The two are different countries, and the wars were fought in different ways. The only parallel of any importance is that they aren't traditional generation 2 or 3 wars, and Americans have no stomache for this kind of war. We disliked counterinsurgency operations in the Philippines and in the "Banana Wars," and ever since. They're long and ugly, and though it's plain silly to say they can't be won, we don't have the will to do so.

Ah, but what about the numbers of Vietnamese and Iraqi dead?
George S. Patton: "You don't win a war by dying for your country, you win a war by making another poor bastard die for his country"
But Patton reasoned like a fool. In any long war, victory goes not to the side that kills more but to the side that can soak up the punishment.
Russians and Vietnamese could and Iraqis can. Americans can't.

Sad but true..my brother is there and they don't support the war like the president makes us believe they do. They don't want to die for people who hate them like the Iraqi's now do. We have become the terrorists..
