each time i start up my computer i have to go through file checking

To Ron G: FAT still exists. Especially on PIN Flash Drives under 4 GB


To answer the question:

Make sure you shut down your computer completely.

If you're using Windows 2000, Windows XP update and your hard drive has more then 4GB of storage upgrade your system to NTFS.

not sure if your os is xp or 98. If you have xp you can convert your drive to New Technology File System NTFS. If you have 98 you can't.

I would highly suggest you get away from FAT. It was phased out for a reason.

Your hard drive might be going bad, backup your files ASAP and run a thorough scan for errors.
