I was getting a clicking noise for a while-did this result in the starter going? He said it's the wrong cable for the car (used car)-I will replace but am curious if this is what resulted in the starter going-I had been getting the clicking on and off while trying to start

If he knew the cable wasn't right why didn't he replace it with the new starter?, I can't see why a cable would make a starter go bad, it will either work or it won't if the cable is bad.

1.Check battery for volts and amps. 2. Clean battery posts. 3. Inspect cables, make sure they are tight on both ends. 4. Make sure that the starter and bendix are on tight. 5. The bindex must receive enough juice from the battery to engage the starter with the flywheel. If the bindex "clicks" the starter is breaking contact, then you check starter and your pockerbook.

If it was the wrong cable, or a bad cable, it may have caused damage to the starter, or even the starter solenoid. The solenoid is more likely, given the clicking sound.

It is possible that the guage of the cable is to small to handle the cranking amperage required as it cant pass the full electric required to the starter Takes a lot more power to turn a V8 then it does to crank a 4 cylinder.. If the cabels to small it cant keep up with that requirement

Probably not, as it was carrying the juice, but wrong size may mean it was not long enough or had the right end connections. If wron size it would get hot if you had a prolonged start.
