Here are some areas that I would recommend for families, but only about 1/2 hour away from the strip. Henderson, Summerlin, and some nice pockets in North Las Vegas such as Aliante or Centennial.

Out past Henderson on the way to Hoover Dam and possibly into Arizona.

Some neighborhoods in Vegas don't quite reflect "the strip." I would suggest Summerlin, Southern Highlands, Anthem, Seven Hills, but again, avoid North Las Vegas. Southern Highlands has a prep school right in the neighborhood...tons of new construction, nice & quiet surprisingly...I forget I live in LV here.

Primm/Jean are on the CA/NV border, about 30-45 minutes out.

You might also look into Boulder City. It has a small town feel. It's also closer to Lake Mead where the family can go boating or swimming. Also because they pull their electricty from the Hoover Dam they pay much lower utility bills than the rest of the Vegas area. You dont really need to worry about being a certain distance from the strip. There are certain bad areas of town, but these aren't necessarily related to their distance from the strip.

You'd want to move to Henderson or Summerlin.
Great for families. Excellent school system in both areas.
And it's far enough away from the strip to not even know it's there.

Good luck and avoid North Las Vegas at all costs.

Henderson, Green Valley are right next to Las Vegas. Jean,Primm, Pahrump, Sandy Valley, Overton and Mesquite. Mesquite may be a little more than 1 hr away. Hope this helps!

i'm a realtor in las vegas and i specialize in people just moving here. send me an email to stevemincer@yahoo.com with what you are looking for ( home to buy, home to rent, condo, etc. ) and i will find something for you and you never have to pay me any kind of fee. las vegas doesn't have any true suburbs like most cities. it's just kind of one big city. places like summerlin and aliante are NOT cities or towns. they are just names for subdivisions.

there is a guy here in town named steve mincer that finds places for people just moving here to live. he helped me find a KILLER 3 bedroom, 2 bath condo for $800 / month! most people that move here don't know any better and they move into an ant farm and get ripped off. i don't know his number anymore, but i know his email is stevemincer@yahoo.com. easy to remember.
