You can connect 2 PCs to each other just using a "cross-over" cable. Since most PC have only 1 network card, when you connect both PC, you can not connect to the internet and that us why you need a hub/switch or a router
A hub would be the equivalent of a power strip (where you connect your TV, DVD, VCR, etc)

You will need another cable, unless you buy a wireless router. Also, you have three choices:
1. Buy a Router and you can be online with both computers at once, if you like.
2 Only plug one computer in at a time, and you can only be online with the computer that is plugged in at the time. This is kind of a pain in the neck if you are going back and forth between computers. It is not too bad of a choice, if you are online with one of the computers most of the time and only rarely get online with the other computer. This is The least expensive choice.
3. Set up one computer as a Server, the other as a client, and the server computer can act as a router. This is not for computer beginners.

If you need to simply connect two computers to each other, you can use a cross-over cable and depending on the OS you are running, use RDP to connect to each other. Ifyou are usig an older OS, you can share files and browse to the other computer using "\\computername\C$" where computername is just that and C is the drive you want to access.
If you want to connect two computers to the internet, you will need to purchase a switch, hub, or router, two cables to connect each computer to the above device and a cable to connect the above device to your Internet Providers device (ie.. Qwest DSL modem or such). Once connected to the internet, you can use a program such as Logmein Free for access to each computer.
There are also other applications out there such as VNC, GoToMyPC and others if the above does not work.
Total cost for one cable connection is about $5-$10
Total cost for switch, hub, or router setup is $30 and up + internet service(optional)

if you want to connect only two computer through lan you should use cross over cable to connect them.no need to purchase expensive products. just go to the market and buy a cable . connect both of your pc and then share any thing you want . to share somthing right click on that go to shareing and security and then choose share as option.
you have to do one thing also give the ip adress to both of your computer. go to the network connection then click on local area network then go to properties and click on tcp/ip and click on properties.give the above ip adress to your first computer 192.168.0.1 and then go to the subnet mask click on it and will take the value automatically. and then click ok.
on your second computer do it the same work but give the different ip address 192.168.0.2
if you want to use the share resources just go to the run command and write the ip address of the computer on which data is share \\ 192.168.0.x x may be 1 or 2
that will ask you to name of the user and password. give the name and password that will show you the share resource.

put two network cards in one system and one in the second then in networking section you bridge the two network cards together that way you run your internet to the first one network card the a cross- over cable from second network card to second computer and then setup ICS(internet connection sharing) and then your computers are networked together and both have internet, personally I would just go buy a switch or router

You will need a crossover cable if there is not a hub/switch/cable/or dsl modem in between them. You can get one at Radioshack or make have someone make one for you.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crossover_cable
If both PC's are at least win2000 or later and they are connected with a crossover they will be able to talk to each other automatically by using APIPA.

If you give more info as to what you are trying to do you'll probably get a clearer answer.

I'd venture to guess that two PC's are going to require two cables unless you use a crossover cable.
