I'm doing a 20,000 word dissertation on acquired disability and the reconstruction of identity after disablement. Does anyone know if it's even possible for me to do it before 30th March? It seems like I have way too much to do. I've done interviews, but nothing else. Has anyone done one in less time than that?

I used to be the queen of winging it and managed to do my dissertation in two weeks. Like you, I had already done some of the ground work so it was just a matter of pulling things together really. If you are like me and leave things until the last minute it means you work better under pressure. Good luck, I'm sure you'll rise to the challenge.

if you have recorded your interviews you can use transcripts of these in your appendix which add to your word count. However you will have to check your dissertation guidelines as to the percentage allowance, the same goes for quotations usually 10% allowance. also the allowance for your dissertation +/- 5% or 10% of the 20,000 words. If you've done your research and have your workbooks you should have all the material you need. I did mine in 2 months and got a first. Break it down into managable chunks using different headings and try to complete each heading every 2 days, for example how can you break up identity after disablement, different degrees etc... write an essay on that. move onto the next, you'll soon get into the swing of things. then put them all together, re-read them and then do your introduction and conlcusion. Oh and dont forget your bibliography

wow - that seems like a pretty ambitious plan. What kind of dissertation is this? If it is for undergrad - then you may be able to get it done before the end of March. You will just have to get to work fast and make it a high priority. If this is for grad school or your Ph.D. - then I don't know if you will meet the deadline. I know quite a few people in doctoral degrees and it takes them between 1-3 years to complete their dissertations. They often take at least one year with no classes just to work on this.

Good luck - let's hope you can get it done or can push back the deadline.

Is this a PhD dissertation? If so -- it sounds pretty ambitious. I wrote my dissertation in about two years. Typically, it takes four to seven years (less for science & more for the arts) to get a PhD -- with two or three years of classes & the rest spent on the dissertation.

On the other hand, if it is an undergraduate thesis, then you don't need the same level of independent thought, and getting it done in a few months is quite possible.

bloody hell! 20,000 words? mines is 8,000, but i did all of my research last summer. i'm about to write mines up fully in a week's time, even though i did a first draft. therefore, the sooner you do the research and get a first draft written up, then you'll be at an advantage compared with others who've started their research late. as for whether you'd be able to do this by the 30th of march, well, if you do it now then perhaps so but you probably have work from your other modules to do as well. therefore, you have to be able to adapt and manage your time effectively. good luck!

I do know someone who did theirs in 3 weeks - but he didn't move from the PC for that.

Do you have a good reason for an extension? it may be worth asking. A friend of mine got an extension because she was interviewing Deaf people in Deaf Clubs and so could only conduct interviews once a week.

I'd say if you have analysed your data you will have no problem, if you haven't and you are using qualitative data then you may have a problem.

It's possible but you will have to work hard.

good luck with it

you've cut it a bit fine but you'll be able to get it in. write yourself a realistic timetable. I've done 3,500 word essays in a couple of days and am also running out of time on my dissertation. the key thing is to do your best in the time you've got left, better to hand in something on time than nothing at all. and no more yahoo answers for you!!

Obviously, depends on the subject and how much thorough research has been done, but I do know people who have pulled an all nighter and the following day living on jelly babies and red bull that have passed with a 2:1

It sounds a really interesting subject, good luck

Less than 400 words per day. Must be possible.
