No, I have worked with both male and female gynecologists. Yes women can empathize with you but men can sympathize. If they are a good gynecologist they are knowledged enough not to overlook symptoms or signs of things just because they aren't female. They get trained just like a female would.

That would be like saying, there is a disadvantage of seeing a female urologist. They all learn the same things. Sometimes I have found men are gentler then the female. A man can't say he knows what it feels like so he will be gentler. A female may think, "it doesn't hurt that bad". So there are pro's anc con's to both. Just find one that listens and knows there stuff no matter what the gender. It's the bed side manner and knowledge you are looking for, right?

Good luck...

I think the only disadvantage would be for women who are shy about letting a male see that part of their body. As a guy, I feel the exact opposite. When I've gone for checkups and had doctors cup my testicles in their hand and ask me to cough to check for hernias, I've always felt more comfortable when a female doctor has done it than when a male doctor has. I'm not shy by any means, I would just prefer a female to do it.

I have had 3 female and several male obgyn doctors. In my experience, the guys are more willing to listen to complaints and are more concerned with the responses to their questions. I have PCOS and was not diagnosed with that condition through 1 male and 2 female obgyn - approx 9 years. The third female obgyn realized it was outside of her specific area (she was an obgyn oncologist) and transferred my care to a male reproductive endocrinologist. He is always gentle, always concerned and in general listens to every question and all problems I am having. I personally prefer male doctors because they don't have the attitude of "been there, done that" or "it's not that bad, I've been there".

However, I do try to see only male doctors that have children. They are more mature and have a different perspective - the "this could be my daughter" perspective. It really makes a difference.

Unless you are uncomfortable with them then no. I have never been to a female gyno, but I have never had a good experience with a female doctor. My cousin and I were talking about this awhile a ago and we both agreed that most women doctors have less compassion and tend to judge their female patients. While male doctors may not experience what we go through, they seem to understand better and are much more compassionate when something comes up like a question or a problem.

Not really, unless you are uncomfortable with a male examining you. I go to a male obgyn, but I have gone to a female before, and I actually prefer males. They seem to be more gentle.

The only disadvantage I can think of is that he hasn't actually experienced "female"pain. Such as cramps, or labor pains. I don't know if he can really relate to how women feel, physically or emotionally.

As long as he's board certified, why would it or should it make a difference? He's a qualified medical practitioner, and that's the only thing that matters.
