my car has the same problem i haven't got around to troubleshooting yet because it only does it with a full tank or in hot weather

this means that it is 90% probable that it is the line that vents vapors from the fuel tank or the charcoal canister that it vents into ( cure is to replace the line or the filter if it is saturated )

Do you notice the odor more often when the tank is full? Possibly the fuel filler neck. Fuel lines are certainly the place to start the trouble shooting process.

the engine might not be buring all the gas sent to it. there could be a small leak that only shows up when there's pressure in the fuel supply line and "goes away" when you shut the car off.

There's a bnh of possibilities.
