In the early 1920's FDR contracted a disease that paralysed him from the waist down. He kept it hidden from everyone by using braces, canes, and supports, but used a wheelchair in private. It was always thought that he had polio, but anymore people think it was probably GBS, a nervous system disorder.

The other answers are correct Roosevelt kept his disability a secret because he felt that if it was know he wouldn't have been elected in 1932. The only people who knew were the White House Press Corp agreed to never mention it in the news in fact most people didn't know about his disability until he gave a speech to Congress in 1945 on crutches.

President Roosevelt was indeed in a wheel chair; due to polio.

I cannot recall the year that he took to the chair, but it was well before he became president.
