Yes, this is true. Franklin Roosevelt contracted polio on 1921. His rehabilitation begun at Warm Springs, GA in 1924 resulted in only slight improvement with his paralyzed legs. He mainly compensated for his wasted legs, by building up his upper body. For public appearances he needed someone to lean on. He could not walk alone. Braces, and an aide, and sometimes a cane were needed for him to walk. He could not walk unaided.
In a few instances it was necessary for him to use a wheel chair or be carried before making a public appearance. The news media of the 1920 through 1945 basically kept this information from the public, which therefore did not know he was paralyzed.
In one unusual instance in 1945 after going to the Yalta Conference, FDR sat down for a speech, made reference to the heavy braces he needed to stand, and apologized for sitting down to deliver it.

Within in the private confines of the White House President Franklin Roosevelt very frequently used a wheel chair.

He came down with polio in the 1920's, and was always in a wheelchair for a few years. He was able to build up his strength enough that he was able to walk by the time he first ran for president in 1932. In later years, he sometimes got tired and used the wheelchair again.

yes, he suffered from polio i believe. i've seen quite a few pictures where you can see part of the chair, but not most of them, as the media weren't such crude boors in those days, and actually attempted to not show the chair as he requested. try to imagine that happening today....LOL.
