Yep indeed the smell is an instant indicator, it is hard to hide stink from mess. But organization too. If you walk in and the place is cluttery you know that it is harder and less likely that everything gets moved and dusted, etc.
I like the smell of Murphy's Oil Soap, it is lemony and clean smelling. It smells like spring cleaning, after which, everything is at it's best.

I would say smell. You'll catch that before you get close enough to see dust or piled up laundry and dishes...I mean those things .... smell. People usualy dont think about it but when you come home from work take your boots off and watch 30 min of tv before their shower, your feet pass odors to the floor. It's especialy bad if you have carpet. After a month of this routine, if you don't do somthing more than vacume... your on your way to a pungent smell.... REGUARDLESS IF YOU CAN SMELL IT OR NOT.

Sparkling Windows (smell is a given)
I am in the cleaning business and here is our secret!
We buy this cleaning cloth off the internet. You have to buy in packages of 5 but they are only like $3 bucks a piece. I have ordered them and use them on everything, especially cleaning windows and clean mirrors... They are made out of tiny fibers. They are guaranteed not to scratch and all you do is rinse the cloth under water, wring it out and wipe ANY surface with no streaks or scratch. Use em over and over. I have not thrown one away yet!
I am sold on this ...I encourage you to try it out….hope this helps…Steve

i worked in house keeping at a hospital and we were taught that the smell was first thing noticed and the floors were the 2nd

smell and clutter...I also tend to notice when I go to someones bathroom how the toilet looks. Since i sit on the toilet, I notice the baseboards and the corners. If there is a lot of hair on the floor, I always notice! I just can't help it.

the way it smells and that it looks empty. My house is too small and is always a mess and when I clean it really well it looks naked.

smell, without being "perfumey" I like those air fresheners but some people overdo it.
Personally, I like the smell of pinesol. That's b/c it's what my grandma used to use.
