What happens if the police / fire department / paramedics only speak English, and the person they are helping doesn't? What happens if politicians print one message in one language, and a different spin in another? We need a standardized language like English, or even dual languages like English and Spanish. This has to be decided, it is necessary for government function.

Language is a unifying force in a community, city, state, country, etc... If people want to come here and become citizens then they need to assimilate into our culture. That doesn't mean that they need to give up their heritage, but the do need to make an effort to belong and learning the language is the first step. It is not the governments responsibility to pay for make sure the immigrant learns the language. The responsibility falls squarely on the immigrant. If they chose not to make the effort and assimilate into our culture then they do not get to become a citizen and do not get to utilize the services that are available to them. When a country gives everything to the people there is no incentive for them to come here and work for the common good of our country. They are just here to take advantage of the things that are available to them without giving anything back.

The fact of the matter is a large part of our population does not speak english. Yes 27 million each year is a lot to spend on brouchures in foreign languages but it is fair less than what it would cost to teach all the legal immigrants english. Think about that.

Because the 'official' language of the United States is ENGLISH!
Our country was founded by men from England and they all spoke English!
On the other side; I hate the issue of us printing documents in different languages just so illegals don't have to learn our language!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I were to move to a foreign country; I would not expect them to bend over backwards to me. I would learn to read and write their language A.S.A.P.!
When my son was in the military - he traveled to many other countries. Each time, prior to him leaving - he was required to attend a class. The class taught him the language (reading and writting) and all of their laws. He was also told "you break their laws - you're on your own"! He was not allowed to go to a country without taking the classes.
Now, why don't the foreign countries tell their people about our laws and MAKE them take classes for reading and writing in English........................................
It seems the military is quite a bit smarter than civilian life.
Illegals must have NO rights until they know how to follow our rules/laws and read/speak our language!

English has always been our national language. Everyone who ever immigrated here has always been required to learn English to survive.
Keeping it that way is a good idea. When we begin mixing our culture linguisticly, the only result is confusion.
Since immigrants really don't have a say, why is this a problem? Immigrants have a voice and ownership in their own country, not this one.

You become a Mexican Citizen you are required to speak Spanish. They have no ballots in English. No schools teach english. If you go to France it is the same everyone is required to speak French. This is an English speaking country so we speak English.

Its a political game.
In the UK I was told recently that millions are spent every year hiring translators for the health service to communicate with patients who don't speak English.
In my mind I feel that its a health service not a language school, and if they want the perks of being British they need to learn the language.

I totally disagree with it if the goal is to raise the immigrants standard of living.
On the other hand, if capitalism needs a lower class, let them continue to speak their native languages and they'll always be in the lower class.
