That place has been sinking since it was built - so why is everyone moving back there? It will flood again - so why take the risk? That's like living in "tornado alley" - why? When a tornado blows through and blows all your crap away - why do you cry? You live right in its path!!!! Am I being evil?

It's OK to gently wonder why some people make some choices. I'm sure there are a lot of people who think the same of where others chose to live as well. I've had people ask why on earth I live in California. We have earthquakes. I can't worry about that. This is my home and I love it here. No one can predict when one might happen. I much prefer this to living in the land of Tornado's and flooding. I do see your point though. I think it's just a personal choice that some people won't be able to understand unless they've lived in a place their whole life and have come to love it.

People live different places for a lot of reasons--and tastes vary. I personally hate cold weather--I'd never live in Minnieapolis--even though I know it is ranked as a very good place to live.

And you are making some assumptions that are invalid. New Orleans flooded because the levees--a federal responsibility--were not properly maintained. That's not likely to happen again, once the system is completely rebuilt and upgraded--at least for a very long time.

And I do know the city--though I don't live there. It has a wonderful culture and a rich history that makes it a delight--its just sad most tourists never get past Bourbon Street to see the real city. That's something worth working to keep.
If that's not your cup of tea, fine . But don't ridicule others because they don't share your tastes-or because they are willing to try to rebuild and keep something that they value, instead of just giving up.

The only people that are possibaly moving back that i know are blacks.I Lived there most of some of my life.and it was my favorite city to go back to then. It really hurt to see New Orleans losing it,s charm It is not so much of the loss of human life but a culture only in the past that was i,m getting depressed. Sorry for the horror of ii,s residents.New Orleans will never be the same again. Rebuild all you want but it is all in the past a past Gone With The Wind.

No, not really. It's important for people to consider the area that they are building/buy a house in. You have to be aware of your surroundings. Don't build an expensive house that is just gonna get blown down, or make sure you have insurance to cover all the possible disasters. People just don't wanna take the time or accept the blame for not taking the time to be prepared.

Side note I'm tired of people quoting the "Bush doesn't care about Black people speech.". Why you may ask, because the potus isn't in charge of handling disaster areas. That's the Governor of that state's job. He has to declare a state of emergency, then the president can give government help. Otherwise they can't do anything.

I sort'a agree with you. it is a great place to visit. But I won't want to live there. Not because of the hurricanes but because it is so hot and muggy.
But think about this I imagine they feel the same way about living up North and having to deal with the bizzards every winter. Or living out west and having to deal with the desert and wild fires. Or living in the Ohio valley and having to deal with the floods every year.
Personally I liked Chicago and New York City but would rather alsmost be put in a Nazi concentration camp than have to live in California.
So guess you could say it is more or less haft a dozen of one or six of the other when it comes to where you like to live.

It's like people who live in Florida... or anywhere in the Midwest. They know there are going to be big hurricanes and tornadoes, and yet they refuse to leave. But some people think Californians are crazy since we will be struck with a big earthquake and all our houses will crumble apart. There are pros and cons everywhere we live.

You're so judgemental. Wherever people live, there are going to be problems. I mean, get real. SO there is tornado alley and those of us who live in that region of the country have to deal with it. But people in like the upper northernmost states deal with horrible, horrible winters that'd freeze your ney-neys off. Californians keep losing THEIR homes to forrest fires, earthquakes and the occassional freak flash flood. And the rest of the country all has its problems too.
I'm just glad I don't live next to you. :-)

i just returned on a trip from NO and i get what you mean, i would never live there!! pretty dangerous and a lot more chaos now, since the hurricane. my heart does go out to the people who lost everything!
i guess if you were raised there you could have an appreciation for the culture.
i think there are many spiritual ties connected the area, due to the voodoo, which brings much confusion to the people.
