my computer is a gateway 2000, mfg. on 12/7/97.i am interested in a lexmart x1240

Check if:
1). you can connect the printer to your computer
2). you have the minimum system requirements for running it's software
3). make sure it supports the operating system you're currently using.

No. The interfaces have changed over the years.

The potential problem with an old computer and a new printer is that new printers often only have a USB connection and old computers often do not. Your computer was built when printers connected through a parallel printer connection but many new printers would not have this.

If the printer and your computer have a compatible connection then they should be compatible. If not, you need to find a different printer.

There are only 2 connections that a printer uses for home users: Parallel and USB. Since your computer is so old, it definitely has a parallel port, but it might not have USB. Make sure either your computer has USB or the printer can be connected to a parallel port (most printers now are USB only).

If you have Windows 98 on that thing a lot of printers won't have the drivers you need now days.
